How I Choose Senior Photo Locations That Actually Fit Your Personality

One of the most common questions seniors and parents ask when planning senior pictures is:

“Where should we take them?”

If you start scrolling Pinterest, you will see thousands of location ideas.

Fields.
Brick walls.
Wildflowers.
Parking ramps.
Downtown streets.

It can quickly feel overwhelming.

Here is the good news. You do not have to figure that out on your own.

One of the biggest parts of my job as a senior photographer is helping choose locations that match your senior’s personality, style, and energy. And honestly, it's one of my favorite things in the planning process. This is where it all comes together.

Instead of asking you to pick exact spots, I guide the entire process so the final locations feel intentional and authentic to your senior.

Senior Photo Locations Should Match Personality, Not Just Look Cool

Great locations are everywhere, especially in and around the Iowa City area.

But the best senior photos happen when the environment reflects the person standing in front of the camera. They also provide posing opportunities, great light direction and/or add to your personal story.

That means thinking about things like:

• personality
• energy and confidence level
• clothing style
• hobbies and interests
• the overall vibe your senior wants

A bold, alternative senior might look incredible in a downtown urban setting with strong textures and architecture.

A senior who loves nature might feel most comfortable in tall grass, trees, or open fields.

A senior involved in sports, music, or dance might want to incorporate a location connected to something meaningful in their life.

The location should support the story of who your senior is.

And that is exactly what I help plan.

You Do Not Have to Choose Locations Yourself

Many seniors worry they are supposed to come to the session with locations already picked out. That is not how my process works.

Instead, I guide you through a planning process that helps me understand the personality, style, and vision for the session. Once I know those things, I choose the locations that will work best.

This approach takes the pressure off and allows the session to feel relaxed and fun instead of stressful.

Step 1: Gathering Inspiration Before the Session

Sometimes seniors send me a Pinterest inspiration board before our planning meeting. This is incredibly helpful because it gives me a quick sense of the visual style they are drawn to.

For example, I might notice patterns like:

• urban backgrounds
• natural fields
• colorful murals
• modern architecture
• soft and airy environments

This gives me insight into the types of locations that might resonate with them.

But it is only the starting point.

Step 2: The Styling and Planning Consultation

About two weeks before the session we meet for a styling and planning consultation. During this meeting we go through outfits and talk about the overall vision for the session. I take photos of outfit combinations and make notes about the senior’s style and personality. This helps me match clothing choices with the right environments.

I also ask questions like:

• Do you picture more urban vibes or nature
• Are there any location styles on your wishlist
• Are there any locations that are a hard pass
• Are there places that are personally meaningful, like a sports field or family farm

This is not a checklist conversation. It is a real discussion where ideas bounce back and forth and we figure out what feels right.

By the end of that meeting I have everything I need to start building the session plan.

Step 3: I Build the Location Game Plan

After the consultation, I take all of my notes and start mapping out the session.

I consider several factors:

• your senior’s personality and energy
• the outfits we planned
• the time of day for the session
• lighting conditions
• weather possibilities
• locations that will photograph beautifully that day

Sometimes we use a few popular locations that photograph well every time.

Other times I scout brand new spots that I think will be perfect for that particular senior.

And occasionally we discover something unexpected during the session that ends up being amazing.

The key is that every location is chosen intentionally based on your senior.

Types of Senior Photo Locations That Work Beautifully

Because Iowa City and Eastern Iowa offer so much variety, I often mix several types of locations within a session.

Urban and Downtown Locations

Urban environments create bold and modern images.

Brick buildings, murals, staircases, and parking ramps create strong textures and dramatic light.

These locations are perfect for seniors who love fashion, sports, or high energy images. Downtown Iowa City offers several great options for this style.

Nature Locations

Fields, trees, and tall grasses create a softer and more relaxed look.  These locations photograph beautifully during late summer and early fall when Iowa landscapes are full of texture and color.

Nature settings are perfect for seniors who want timeless images that feel calm and natural.

Some of my favorite nature locations are:

  • Iowa City Park
  • F. W. Kent Park
  • The Coralville Resevior and Fossile Gorge
  • Hickory Hill
  • Terry Trueblood Recreation Area

Architectural Locations

Modern buildings, staircases, and geometric shapes can create striking and artistic images. These locations add a dramatic visual element to the session. The University of Iowa provides numerous buildings with architectural interest such as Hancher Auditorium, The Visual Arts Buildings, Voxman Music Building, Stanley Museum of Art and, of course, the Old Capital and Pentacrest area.

Meaningful Personal Locations

Sometimes the most powerful images happen in places that are meaningful to your senior.

Examples might include:

  • a sports field
  • a dance studio
  • a lake or trail they love
  • a family farm or property

These locations instantly add personality and story to the photos.

The Secret Most People Miss: Outfits and Locations Work Together

Locations and clothing choices should complement each other.

For example:

  • Flowy dresses photograph beautifully in open fields.
  • Bold fashion pieces stand out against urban textures.
  • Neutral outfits often look incredible in nature settings.
  • This is why the planning consultation is so important.

By looking at outfits ahead of time, I can choose locations that enhance the overall look of the session. The result feels polished and intentional without feeling forced.

A Quick Note to Seniors

If you are the senior reading this and wondering if you have to know how to pose or plan everything out, the answer is no.

You do not need to show up knowing what to do.

That is my job.

Your job is simply to bring your personality and a few outfits you love. I will guide you through the rest and put you in locations that match your vibe.

No awkward posing. No stiff smiles. Just real moments and a lot of fun.

How We Turn All of This Into an Amazing Session

By the time your session day arrives, everything has already been thoughtfully planned.

We know which outfits we are starting with.
We know which types of locations fit your senior best.
We have a flexible plan that works with the light, weather, and energy of the day.

Sometimes we follow the plan exactly. Sometimes we discover something unexpected along the way that ends up being even better.

Either way, you can trust that every location choice is made with your senior in mind.
