5 Myths That Keep Parents From Booking Senior Photos (And Why You Shouldn’t Believe Them)

Thinking about booking a senior portrait session in Iowa City but feeling overwhelmed by all the options? You’re not alone—and you’re definitely not behind. I work with parents every year who aren’t sure where to start or wonder if professional senior photos are even worth it.

Let’s clear the air.

Here are five common myths that stop families from investing in bold, authentic senior portraits—and the truth that might just change your mind.

Myth #1: “There are so many photographers—I’ll just pick one later.”

Truth: Senior year moves fast. Before you know it, graduation announcements are due and the yearbook deadline has passed. If you wait too long, you’ll either miss out or be stuck settling.

Why it matters: Photographers who specialize in senior portraits (like me!) book out months in advance—especially for summer and fall sessions.

📅 Pro tip: I open bookings for the next senior class every Black Friday. Don’t wait—grab your ideal date early.

Myth #2: “This is too expensive for just a few photos.”

Truth: You’re not just paying for pictures—you’re investing in a full photography experience that tells your senior’s story.

My senior sessions include:

  • A custom styling consult
  • Expert posing and direction from a PPA Master Photographer
  • High-resolution edited images (aka ePortraits)
  • Access to heirloom-quality wall art, albums and grad announcements.

🎓 These images become centerpieces at graduation parties, family homes, and future milestones. They’re meant to last.

Myth #3: “My teen won’t want to do this.”

Truth: I’ve heard this from so many parents. And nearly every time, those teens end up having a blast.

Whether your teen is camera-shy or full of personality, I create a relaxed, upbeat environment that makes them feel confident and seen. We’ll skip the stiff poses and focus on real energy, real smiles, and real style.

💬 Don’t be surprised if they say, “That was actually fun.”

Myth #4: “It’s too overwhelming to plan a whole session.”

Truth: That’s my job—not yours. Once you book, I guide you through every step of the process.

Here’s what you get:

  • A style session to go over outfits, locations, and inspiration
  • Full session prep guides, reminders, and product previews
  • An in-person reveal + ordering appointment to select your images and artwork

Myth #5: “We’ll just take some casual photos ourselves.”

Truth: Casual photos are great—but this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. And your phone camera can’t deliver the same level of artistry, confidence, and lasting impact.

My professional senior portraits are:

  • Fully guided by PPA Master Photographer with over 20 years experience
  • Shot with expert lighting and angles
  • Designed to capture your teen’s true personality
  • Delivered as beautiful, high-end artwork—not just files in a folder

🖼️ This is the year to do it right. You only get one senior year.

Let’s Make This Easy—and Unforgettable

If any of these myths have been holding you back, I hope this gave you the clarity and confidence you need.

You don’t have to stress.
You won’t regret investing.
And your senior will look—and feel—amazing.
